         Section 1

         General Description

             This Software Release Announcement (SRA)
describes the System Build Utilities (SBU) for
CTOS III R1.1. It also provides information on
             how to order the product.

The System Build Utilities provide all the
files needed to build (SysGen) a customized
             CTOS operating system.
This release of the System Build Utilities
includes a new system utility, the Mini
Customizer, that allows the administrator to
             modify certain sysgen parameters without
             linking the operating system.

         1.1 Release Naming Conventions
The CTOS III R1.1 release is both a server and
             client workstation release. The following
naming convention has been adopted for the CTOS
             III R1.1 system files:

         1.1.1 Family Type

               vSrvr Virtual memory multiprocessor
                         server workstation operating system
               vClstr Virtual memory client workstation
                         operating system

               vStnd Virtual memory standalone
                         workstation operating system

               Fs File System

         43597400002 1

             Srvr Server Agent for server
                      workstations

             Clstr Client Agent for client
                      workstations

      2 43597400002

         1.1.2 Configuration Type

               Srp Multiprocessor configuration

Lfs Client workstation with local file
                         system
               N Singleprocessor file system

         1.1.3 File Type
.img Bootable system image, output of
the PMake utility. The Debug File
                         utility cannot symbolically display
or modify a .img file because it
does not contain a version 6 run
file header and it uses data
                         compression.

.run Run file, output of the Linker.
                         The Debug File utility can
                         symbolically display or modify a
.run file. Run files are also
input to the PMake utility as
                         intermediate files used in the
                         creation of a bootable system
                         image.

.sym Symbol file, output of the Linker.
.map Linker report, output of the
                         Linker.

.gdt System image report, output of the
                         PMake utility.

.fls Object list file, input to the
                         Linker.
               .asm System generation prefix file,
                         input to the Assembler.

         43597400002 3

Names of system files are a concatenation of
          the above mnemonics.

For example, vSrvr.img is the virtual memory
operating system (bootable image) for a server
          workstation; vClstrLfs.img is the virtual
memory operating system for a client
workstation with a local file system.

      1.2 Preconfigured Operating Systems

          This release contains four preconfigured
virtual memory operating systems. They are
          vClstr, vClstrLfs, vStnd, and vSrvr.

VClstr and vClstrLfs are the client workstation
operating systems. VStnd is the standalone
operating system which may optionally load
either the Server or Client Agent to become a
          singleprocessor vSrvr or vClstrLfs operating
system. VSrvr is the multiprocessor version of
CTOS III which is loaded in the master
processor and IOPs in a multiprocessor server.

The following are the operating system
             configuration parameter differences. These and
other configurable parameters are defined in
the SysGen.asm file in the <1.1vGen> directory.

              nPcb 72 96 192 192

The following are the file system configuration
             differences:

             Config Parameter FsS_N Fs_Srp

              nDisk 12 16
              nScsi 4 4
              nFcb 300 1000nFab=nFcb*2
              nFub = nFcb* 2
              cbNameSpace = nFcb * 25

The vClstrLfs and vStnd operating systems use
the FsS_N.asm configuration file, and vSrvr
             uses the Fs_Srp.asm configuration file.

         1.3 Standards

The new CTOS III R1.1 merged operating system
conforms to the CTOSOPEN standard and will be
maintained to that standard to ensure that
             compliance is satisfied.

         Section 2

         Release Functionality

The following section presents an overview of
the build functionality and a description of
the new utility included in this release.

         2.1 Build Commands

The following commands are used for building
the file system and operating system:

                 Link File System
                  File System type (e.g. FsS_N)
                  Version
                  [File system name (FileSys)]

                 Link CTOS III
                  Operating System type (e.g. vClstr)
                  Version

In CTOS III, the Client Agent (AKA Cluster
Agent) has been separated from the operating
system, and is linked separately like the file
system. There are two agents, one for the
server workstation and one for the client
workstation. The following command is used for
building either the Client Agent or the Server
             Agent.

                 Link Agent
                  Agent type (Srvr or Clstr)
                  Version

         43597400002 7

As part of the CTOS III keyboard service, a
          default nationalization file, K1KbdTables.obj
is linked into the operating system. This file
is provided with the System Build Utilities.
If you need to change it, use the Keyboard
Customization Tool and Keyboard Tables, which
are released as part of Standard Software R12.3
          .

      2.2 Mini Customizer Utility

The System Build Utilities package now includes
a system utility that permits a system
          administrator to modify certain sysgen
parameters. The utility is called the Mini
Customizer. In the previous release of CTOS
III, there were three different versions of the
server operating system: small, medium, and
large. Each of these versions was created by
changing certain sysgen parameters, such as the
number of workstations and the number of
partitions. The idea behind the Mini
Customizer (AKA the Knob) is that a system
administrator can turn a knob in order to
          change system parameters.

To invoke the Mini Customizer, simply type
             Mini Customizer

When Customizer.run is invoked, it prompts the
user for the name of a system image (.img)
file. It then displays the current sysgen
parameters that can be modified for that image
          file:

                HELP key is available.
                Type GO when ready.

parameters. For example, if you were to press
the HELP key while the cursor is positioned on
the first line (Number of Partitions), a
message explaining the parameter would be
             displayed.

The Mini Customizer works by editing an image
file. It peeks into the image file, finds the
place where all the sysgen parameters are
stored, updates the parameters, puts the data
back in the image file, recalculates the
checksum, and writes the new image file.
Note: Only CTOS III version R1.1 image (.img)
files can be edited by the Mini Customizer. If
you try to edit an older image file, you will
             get an error message:

Old style image file cannot be edited
                does not have Sysgen Record.

Customizer.run uses a message file named
             CustomizerMsg.bin. The file CustomizerMsg.txt
is included so that the messages can be
localized. See the CTOS System Administration
             Guide for more information.

         Section 7

         Customizing an Operating System

This section describes how to use the System
Build Utilities to build customized versions of
CTOS III R1.1. For the CTOS III R1.1 release,
many parameters are now configurable by using
entries in the Config.sys file, or by using the
Mini Customizer utility. Therefore, it may not
be necessary to build a customized operating
system. Refer to the CTOS III R1.1 SRA or the
CTOS System Administration Guide to determine
if your changes require building customized
             versions of CTOS.

All the files needed to do a system build are
contained on the Installation Diskettes. The
             installation procedure creates a <1.1vGen>
directory on your hard disk with the libraries
and files needed to build any configuration of
the operating system. Note that the Standard
Software utilities you need to do a system
build (e.g. Assembler, Linker, etc.) must be
             installed separately from the Development
             Utilities (B25U22) media.

7.1 Building a CTOS III Operating System

There are three configurable parts of the
operating system: the file system, the Client
and Server Agents, and the composite operating
system. Each configurable entity has a prefix
file (.asm) that has the configurable system
parameters. The files are named as described
in section R1.1 of this SRA (vSrvr.asm,
             Clstr.asm, FsS_N.asm).
Except for vClstr, all operating systems

         43597400002 17

include a file system (FsS_N or Fs_Srp) which
must be configured and linked separately before
the operating system can be linked. The
vClstrlfs and vClstr versions include the
Client Agent (Clstr) which must be configured
and linked before the operating system can be
linked. The prebuilt file systems and agents
are provided with the SBU if your
configuration does not require that they are
          modified.

To change the configuration, modify the build
parameters contained in the prefix files or in
the file SysGen.Asm. Comments in SysGen.Asm
describe the configuration parameters in the
prefix files. The SysGen prefix files use the
$Include statement to incorporate the contents
of the files SysGen_Common.mdf, SysGen.mdf and
          SysGen.asm.

      7.1.1 Building the Workstation Agents

      18 43597400002

If one of the workstation agents is to be
modified, make the appropriate changes to the
prefix file (Srvr.asm or Clstr.asm) and
Assemble the modified file. The following is
an example of building the Server Agent:

                Assemble RETURN
                Assemble
                 Source files Srvr.asm RETURN
                 [Errors only?] Yes GO
                 [Macro expansion]
                 [Object file]
                 [Print file]
                 [Error file]
                 [List on pass 1?]
                 [:f1:]
                 [:f0: ([Sys]<Edf>)]

Use the Link Agent command to link the agent:

                Link Agent RETURN
                Link Agent
                 Agent type Srvr RETURN
                 Version 1.1.ABC GO

The Link Agent command produces an object
(.obj) ClstrAgent.obj which is linked into
vClstr and vClstrLfs operating systems. It
also produces the loadable agents, Clstr.Sys or
Srvr.Sys. See the CTOS III R1.1 SRA for
             information on loadable agents.

         43597400002 19

      7.1.2 Building the File System

If you need to change the file system
configuration, edit the prefix file, either
FsS_N.asm or Fs_Srp.asm, and then Assemble the
          modified file:

             Assemble RETURN
             Assemble
               Source files FsS_N.asm RETURN
               [Errors only?] Yes GO
               [Macro expansion]
               [Object file]
               [Print file]
               [Error file]
               [List on pass 1?]
               [:f1:]
               [:f0: ([Sys]<Edf>)]

Link the file system using the Link File System
          command.

             Link File System RETURN
             Link File System
               File System typeFsS_N RETURN
               Version 1.1.XYZ GO
               [File system name]

The Link File System command produces the
          object (.obj) file FileSystemS_N.obj or
FileSystem_Srp.obj which is linked into the
vSrvr, vStnd and vClstrLfs operating systems.

      20 43597400002

         7.1.3 Building the Operating System

If you need to change the operating system
configuration, make the appropriate changes to
             the vSrvr.asm, vClstr.asm, vClstrLfs.asm,
vStnd.asm or SysGen.asmfiles and Assemble the
             modified file:

                Assemble RETURN
                Assemble
                 Source files vSrvr.asm RETURN
                 [Errors only?] Yes GO
                 [Macro expansion]
                 [Object file]
                 [Print file]
                 [Error file]
                 [List on pass 1?]
                 [:f1:]
                 [:f0: ([Sys]<Edf>)]

Link the operating system using the Link CTOS
             III command:

                Link CTOS III RETURN
                Link CTOS III
                 Operating System typevSrvr RETURN
                 Version 1.1.CustomGO

The Link CTOS III command produces the bootable
             image file vSrvr.img, vClstr.img, vClstrlfs.img
             or vStnd.img.

         43597400002 21

      7.2 Removing Optional Services

      7.2.1 Removing the Debugger

In this release of CTOS III it is possible to
remove the Debugger from the operating system,
or simply not load it for use. To control the
loading of the Debugger use the :LoadDebugger:
option of the system configuration file
          (Config.Sys). See the CTOS System
Administration Guide for details on this
          configuration parameter.

If you want to build an operating system which
does not include the Debugger, the operating
system must be relinked without the debugger.
This is done by editing the list of files that
are linked together to make the operating
system. There is a .fls file for each type of
          operating system: vSrvr.fls, vClstr.fls,
          vClstrLfs.fls, and vStnd.fls.

Edit the .fls file for the type of operating
          system you want to build:

Replace the the debugger resident modules
          entry in the .fls file:
(this is the first Dbg.lib entry in the
          file)

      22 43597400002

                     Dbg.Lib(...)

                 with

                     Dbg.Lib(DbgRaw_p DbgNul)

                Remove the Debugger initialization modules
             from the file:
(this is the second Dbg.lib entry in the
             file)

                     Dbg.lib(DbgStrings_P DbgOnc_P)

                Remove the module OsNamePlaces from
             OS.lib(...) section and
                InitOsNamePlaces from Init.lib(...) section.

         43597400002 23

Edit the prefix file for the type of operating
          system you want to build:

             Replace

             SET(fDebugger,1)

             with

             SET(fDebugger,0)

When finished Link the operating system as
          described above.
